How can I take extra care of my teeth during the holidays?

The holidays are fast approaching even though they may look different this year. For many of us, it means indulging in our favorite foods, sweets and treats. Be sure to balance that out with these tips for a healthy smile! Think veggies and fruits! Carrots have an extra satisfying crunchy appeal!

Do your best to maintain a normal oral health routine. Brushing and flossing twice a day and using your Waterpik and electric toothbrush! If you don’t have one, we have them in the office for you to purchase. They make excellent items to add to your Christmas list! The holidays are also a great time to schedule your year-end dental checkup before your insurance benefits run out! Call us, we still have some spots left!

Avoid chewy, sticky, hard candies and sweets even though it is your Grandma’s specialty! Candy Canes, Cinnamon Rock Candy, Caramels and Chewy Nougat are often the very treats that cause teeth to break or fillings to be pulled out. Thinking of an unwanted holiday trip to the dentist can help deter you from those yummy dangers!

Drink plenty of water and choose clear colored beverages. Water has many wonderful health benefits and can help keep you looking your best! Water can also clean away freshly formed bacteria aiding in optimal oral health.

And lastly, never-ever use your pearly whites as present openers. Let’s be honest, we’ve all done it. However, this can weaken enamel and fragile edges of your teeth, leading to cracking, breakage and a costly repair.

Remember these tips and have a great holiday season!
